Judge Dredd

2000 AD Prog 1806 available now in UK stores & digital download over 2000 AD online shop.

“Judge Dredd: Asleep” & “The Cold Deck”

Droids: Rob Williams, Mark Harrison, Al Ewing, Henry Flint

Asleep:

So Sov sleeper agent Weller gets highly motivated going on a suicidal run against the Judges? Okay, then. Although the ending has some ambiguity, Weller and his family aren’t going to live very long. Unless they need a sleeper threat sequel, but Weller isn’t that great of a character.

The Cold Deck:

Dying perp Frisco forshadows how the Judges Dredd and Buell and going to enter a big trap set by an ambitious Judge. Folger, chief Wally Squad judge, is now a corpse in the bottom of a chem-pit. The Judges persue a pair of criminals in the Undercity (yawn), but the Justice Department reorganizing developments from a recent Prog takes focus (hmmm).

Now, on to the haiku!

Brass Sun: The Wheel of Worlds

Droids: Ian Edginton & I.N.J. Culbard

Science spectacle
Key coveted, Wren’s watched for
Possible deceit.

I’m wondering whether the universe is actually a micro-verse with large god-like beings controlling a macro-verse. Seventeen and Wren transport in a bullet, the planets are gears, and the blind watchmaker is probably a more active presence outside the main character’s struggles.

Low Life: Saudade

Droids: Rob Williams & D’Israeli.

Dirty Frank’s silly.
Commentary’s on the nose.
Here comes the sharp bite.

Farcical lunar colony featuring a corporate man-shark feels unlike a Dredd spinoff until the last page in 1806. Dirty Frank, the bum-like Judge, searches for a reason why he’s on the moon. It’s weird and relatively light, but I’m interested to see where this goes.

“ABC Warriors: Return to Earth”

Droids: Pat Mills & Clint Langley

Pathetic humans!
Hammerstein’s will exceeds your
mad belligerence!

Somehow, while we’re obviously supposed to either sympathize with Hammerstein or hang our heads in shame at humanity’s destructive tendencies, ABC Warriors manages to entertain.

“The Simping Detective: Jokers to the Right”

Droids: Simon Spurrier & Simon Coleby

Got to the point
Where lives, loves are untangled.
Now Jack’s in big stomm.

I amazed at how Spurrier balances the writing between clownishness and noirish danger. Both Simons make detective tropes like the femme fatale and the jaded narrator compelling.
