Amanda smashes

Written by Robert Kirkman. Art by Ryan Ottley, Cory Walker, and Cliff Rathburn. Colored by John Rauch.

After noticing all the hype, I had to review this and take a position as a newcomer to the Invincible universe. Is Invincible #94 a good starting on point for getting to know the story? Somewhat. It’s obvious there’s a war and both sides are noticeably different. However, the Invinci-verse started to become clearer to me later in the issue.

There’s an ongoing between our heroes and the Flaxans led by the Zaxal royals. There’s romance happening between long-lived Rex and Amanda. Amanda engages in battle as a big green monster who ages quickly but wears a belt mitigating the effect. I think the black guy in the blue and gold is Invincible. For a comic bearing his name, he doesn’t take a leading role for most of the issue.

There’s also a page featuring Cool Bald Black Guy, Big Wolfman, and Lusty Ogling Man in Space, but I’m sure I’ll tolerate them in a future issue.

That’s okay. I liked seeing the grittier gilded robots fight the white-and-blue robots. The art, executed by several, is fine by me for a epic super-struggle. What I would’ve cut is some of the declarations of love between Rex and Amanda. I got the point the first time. The big revelation in the final panels will keep me coming back.

Invincible #94 isn’t a bad single issue, but newcomers would be better served finding back issues. From this newcomer’s point of view, I give it a limited recommendation: two hooves out of four.

Excuse me, but I’ll go research. In the meanwhile, go ahead and preview this issue & America’s Got Powers #3.
