Teen Titans Annual #1 (2012) Review

It’s about time! Ever since the new reboot began, I have been waiting to see this “Culling”. I have been a huge Teen Titans fan since Geoff Johns and Mike McKone revamped them a few years back and I have stuck with it since. This new re-incarnation is pretty awesome. For one, this is a BIG issue! It’s filled with guest stars, special guests, people you won’t see again (WOW) and even first appearances.

This 48 page book is written by the greats! Geoff Johns comes back to put his mark on this book as well as the infamous Marv Wolfman back into the Teen Titans fold! Chris Castallo, of Teen Titans/Outsiders Secret Files 2005 fame, rounds out the writing team to help make this book totally awesome! Breaking the first part of this book into chapters worked out well and is definitely something I miss in comics. ~~I hope this team stays together longer as it made for an amazingly interesting book.~~

As for the art, it’s something I have come to love. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great art! I was just used to the simple, realistic stylings of Mike McKone in the old series. The new suits that they are wearing is what I was referring to. In this new universe, they Teen Titans have a way more elaborate costuming department going on. They artists behind them in this issue ~~(Wellington Alves, Ed Benes, Dale Eaglesham, Tom Grindberg and Elton Ramalho)~~ are kicking up the detail and keeping with the stylings of the rest of the relaunched universes with amazing effects and hauntingly new villains. ~~Inked by Oclair Albert, Mariah Benes, Wayne Faucher, Drew Geraci and Alex Lei~~, the effects created by the artists are really brought out by this group. The way they kept the same feeling of the entire book astounds me, and this is one book where you come to appreciate everyone that brought this book to life.

I would also like to reiterate that the art is not lacking at all in this issue and is another reason why I think this is a perfect comic book that everyone should try to pick up. With a cover like this, why wouldn’t you want to give it a chance? ~~Rod Reis~~ did an AMAZING face-off cover of this book and I hold it in my top five covers of this month.
